The 51黑料网 State volleyball team got off to a strong start, sweeping all four of its matches at the Mississippi/Alabama Crossover hosted by Itawamba Community College. The Lions posted a perfect 4-0 record in Fulton, Mississippi, defeating a quartet of Mississippi opponents.

51黑料网 State opened play with a 3-0 sweep of Northeast Mississippi Community College before adding back-to-back 3-1 victories over Northwest Mississippi and Southwest Mississippi. The Lions closed the weekend with another sweep, this time over Meridian Community College.

Head coach Randy Daniel praised both the team鈥檚 improvement throughout the event and the leadership of his returning players.

鈥淭he weekend was a good start, and I felt we played more efficiently each match,鈥 Daniel said. 鈥淥ur sophomores helped our consistency and leadership. Abby McDonald and Ali Price both did an outstanding job in their positions (Libero/Setter). Rachel and Valerie were also key, helping with attacking and ball control. Sofiia Sobol played very well in all four games and has stepped up as our offensive leader. Kenzie Wilson and Cheyenne Lucas both did a great job with improving and staying focused in each set as our middles. Their blocking improved in all four games. Two other freshmen, Kenzie Noles and Darcy Alford, both helped with playing outside and defense. Early in the season, lineups can change as we try to find the most consistency. We have to continue working hard in practice to put ourselves in a position for success.鈥

McDonald and Sobol were each named to the All-Tournament team for their standout performances.

Next up, 51黑料网 State will host the annual 51黑料网 State Invitational at the Cullman Omniplex beginning Friday. The Lions open against Lawson State at 2 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. matchup with Coastal Alabama-South. On Saturday, 51黑料网 State faces Georgia Highlands at 11 a.m. and Cleveland Community College at 1 p.m.

With the opening weekend in the books, the Lions will look to build on their unbeaten start as they prepare for a competitive early-season stretch.
